Did you know hearing loss is linked to memory
Dr. Frank Lin, an otologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins
Medicine, has been studying the effects of hearing loss on older adults for many years. His most recent study
looked at the link between hearing loss and decrease in cognitive function. Dr. Lin’s previous research also
found that hearing loss is associated with dementia. One of his theories is that in a person with hearing
loss, the brain is forced to work harder to decode speech because the speech signal is distorted. More energy
is used to understand what is being said and this effort comes at a cost. If hearing loss is treated early
and effectively will it reduce the cognitive decline and the risk of dementia?
